Advice: you should read the part 1 than the part 2 before read the part 3
The emergency tactics to attract those advertisers faster
You have set up an advertise page then your blog have less then 100K on Alexa so you feel you can sit back and wait for those advertiser.
If it was that easy I won’t write this post at all but here a little trick I think can work for any blog
(in the next example I will use an ad area with four 125×125 ads spot as seen on problogger front page )
What you need to succeed the emergency tactics:
- A friend in the same niche (very important to be in the same niche to bring the competition factor)
- Two principle affiliate banner and one extra (you can also have one affiliate link and add another blog’s friend
Your ad area should look like this:
You have only one ad space available. Why I suggest you to have only one space available if this is your first time in direct sale? The answer is simple, it is your first time so you have to test your ad space and learn the feedback of your first advertiser. If everything goes wrong, at least you will have one unhappy advertiser. It is better than four unhappy advertisers that can destroy your reputation in 1 second.
How do you make your first sale?
- You have to set up a month cycle
- You must put the phrase: those ads spot are usually sold fast (first emergency word)
- You have to determinate how much time an ad spot can stay blank before you add your extra affiliate banner (really important)
Now you are ready to go:
Example
Imagine, I am an advertiser that comes to your blog. I see this blank ad spot and then decide to check your advertise page. I check the price and see the phrase: “those ads spot are usually sold fast”!!! And check your front page post. (so make sure to have great post on your front page !!) .
I get back to your ads area and see an ad spot with a related blog in the same niche (your friend blog) and related affiliate links. Affiliate links, anyone can have it but if you add a blog in the same niche, it just push the value of this ad area.
Let’s say I don’t want to buy it right away… then you should put your extra affiliate banner after the time you determinate.
Now a potential advertiser has many options:
- Leave and go away (sad but it is possible)
- Contact you to know when the next ad spot will be available (if this happen makes sure to give him a plan to reserve his ad space before the deadline!!!)
- He may observe your blog activities (now, you have the responsibility to always watch the quality of your blog post if you start direct sale)
Repeat this scenario each month until a sale is made (avoid pattern … change your blank ad spot deadline often… change your affiliate design if possible etc … give the feeling this is a healthy ads area.
You got your first sale…almost
The unique rule you should remember … always tries to sell for at least two months. (you can even say you got one month free on your first buy…give them a smile)
Each time you make a sale remove an affiliate link and this ad spot will be your new blank ad spot. Repeat all this until you got all your ad spot with a happy advertiser.
Start slow and get bigger…

very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
Idetrorce
You don’t agree , do you have another solution for us
Ah, I see. One more thing…When, in your opinion, is a good time to start selling adspace on your blog? What would your minimum traffic stats be when advertisers would want to start buying space?
You can start at anytime when you have the feeling you can do more in a month then your regular affiliate programs. For example if you have 100 visitors/ day, you can not ask for more then $5 a month. So, with 1000 visitors/ day you can not ask for more then $50… Now the real king is the content and your website activity. If advertisers have the feeling that your content can go viral, he will try to buy your stuff… An advertiser need visibility so he need to make sure your content is useful for the short and the long term. So work on the content and get a fan base…
Great tactic. I actually haven’t read a post that broke things down like you did in this article. I’m a little curious…Did you try this method out for yourself with the expected results?
I tried it already on another website project I share with friend. I haven’t tried it to this blog yet because I don’t have the right number to switch so far. I don’t know yet if I will look for advertiser because once you get one you have the responsibility to maintain the same among of traffic and keep your blog as healthy as possible.
What about the results? I don’t sell products on my other website project so my revenue comes from advertising. My main goal is to get traffic by giving quality content and be able to target an audience and know this audience. Once you have those two elements you are able to make a lot of money online.
